Mayport Elementary School Science Night

Kids’ FUN participated in a very fun evening, complete with live music, barbecue and lots of other great organizations. Teaching the kids about coastal science were Jacksonville University, St. Johns River Keeper, Jacksonville Reef Research Team, the US Navy, and the University of Florida, just to name a few. There were board games, stickers, digital microscopes, a plastic bag costume, cool shells, underwater videos, critters, and so much more. The kids went especially crazy over the opportunity to hold live animals in Mayport’s very own touch tank!

Our table displayed SCUBA gear, a huge horse conch shell, lots of sponges, and videos made by COAST FUN Club students.  We also had face painting and plastic bag flower crafts, a great idea from PlasticBagCrafts.com.

Kids’ FUN works with COAST, offering an after school club on Fridays for Mayport’s 4th and 5th graders. The kids get to learn about the ocean, produce short films and connect with kids at Forjando Alas Youth Center in Costa Rica through shared service learning projects. We take field trips to see the beach and marsh habitats so the kids can get up close and personal with the natural resources found in their backyard.

We are also very excited to be creating curriculum with Mayport’s curriculum design specialist, which will be used in classrooms around the world!
